What is a Graphic Score?

A graphic score is a visual representation of music that steps away from traditional notation. Instead of notes on a staff, imagine shapes, lines, and colors that suggest mood, dynamics, or rhythm. It’s less about following strict rules and more about interpreting the essence of sound—an invitation for musicians to express themselves through creativity and intuition.

For me, a graphic score is what sound feels like. It’s a way to capture the emotional and physical experience of music visually, blending the boundaries between hearing and seeing.

How Did I Get Here?

My journey into graphic scores has been one of curiosity and discovery. Coming from a background in music and composition, I’ve always been fascinated by the spaces where sound and visuals intersect. The first time I saw a graphic score, it was like a lightbulb moment: music could live on paper in a way that wasn’t just notes and symbols. It could be art. It could be as fluid and open as the experience of listening itself.

Since then, I’ve been exploring how these scores can tell stories, evoke emotions, and inspire collaboration with musicians and artists alike.
