Voicing, composing and messing about with noises.
Susinusoidal partial editing analysis and resynthesis, madam? Don't mind if I do!
It’s been very busy here in the sound studio at Clarke Gables. Here’s a whistle-stop tour of what I’ve been up to.
1. Voicing
I loved voicing this TV ad. The client wanted a read to match the sunny visuals, while still maintaining the classic Tanqueray vibe.
I’ve also recorded projects for clients all over the world, including AstraZeneca, Polident and the Rhino Sanctuary of Namibia.
2. Improvising
I’ve worked with this much-loved client for yonks. He asked me to voice some liners for YorkMix Radio and I thought I’d improv a line, just for kicks. And it made it to air!
3. Academic review
It’s just casual, they said. It’s just an annual check-in, they said. It’s absolutely nothing to worry about, they said. It was the first viva of my PhD and I was VERY RELIEVED to have got through it unscathed. Onwards!
4. Composing
I’ve completed two pieces for the song cycle I’m writing. I’m also about three quarters of the way through the first draft of a ma-hoosive oratorio. Fun, right?
I’ve also been playing about with Spear. If you love audio, you’ll love this. There are loads of YouTube tutorials to help you figure it out.
5. Reading
Shadowlands - A Journey Through Lost Britain by Matthew Green is one of the best books I’ve EVER read. It’s about towns and villages that have disappeared for a variety of (frankly heartbreaking) reasons: coastal erosion, plague, forces of nature or drowned beneath a reservoir. I challenge anyone to read the chapter on Capel Celyn without weeping. Here’s a snippet.
6. Listening
This is gorgeous. It was written and performed by Matthew Bourne, one of the tutors at my old college, Leeds Conservatoire. Sit back, close your eyes and enjoy.
7. Parenting
My eldest has been in Austria all year studying at Innsbruck University and is due home next week. My youngest is about to perform in The Royal Ballet School’s summer shows. Words cannot express how proud I am of them both. I can’t wait for us all to be back under the same roof again.
A great truth about being a voiceover…
Cute pic of my dog…
If you like what I do, you can buy me a coffee. :)
I really did enjoy the liner for YorkMix radio. =]
