If you'd asked me last week if I'm the voice of a big TV show I'd have said no. But now...
'Big project' news, stuff about voicing, composing, book recs, some music and a cute pic of my dog.
First of all…I have some actual news.
I’m delighted to tell you I’ve been asked to be the voice of Channel 4’s ‘Rise and Fall,’ a new epic reality TV show.
It’s packed with drama, betrayal, alliances and cut-throat ambition where are group of players are competing to win a huge cash prize. This is a game about POWER.
And I play the part of…The Lift.
My voice brief is: authoritative, gravitas, unemotional, smooth, calm, mature, slightly menacing…which my family can tell you is me to a T.
“The Rise And Fall lift is a key component within the show, transporting players from the top to bottom, or vice versa.”
The show is made by Studio Lambert - the guys behind hit TV shows ‘Gogglebox,’ ‘Undercover Boss’ and ‘The Traitors.’
I can’t wait for you to see it. Here’s the trailer. You’ll hear me at the end.
You’ll be able to watch ‘Rise and Fall’ from March 19th on Channel 4 in the UK.
So what have I been doing in the sound studio this month?
1. Voicing.
This month I’ve recorded voiceovers for (among others) the Cats’ Protection League, Unilever, Walmart and Vodafone. I was also asked to be a “cheerful nun.” And a talking bollard.
And here’s (another) completely pointless impression I’ve discovered I can do.

2. Rehearsing, performing and composing music.
A piece of my music was performed at the Empower concert in Manchester.
TINY BLUE MARBLE is for flute, harp and viola. Originally written for Britten Sinfonia, it was performed by the brilliant players from RNCM. Here’s a short extract.
3. Reading.
I know reading a book about mushrooms might not sound interesting but trust me, this is brilliant. Merlin Sheldrake’s Entangled Life is a mind-altering journey into the spectacular world of fungi. It transforms our understanding of the planet and life itself. Seriously. It’s awesome.
This passage about slime moulds BLEW MY MIND. Have a listen.
4. Listening.
This is one of the best cover versions I’ve ever heard. Here’s Charlotte Hatherley singing The Bee Gees’ classic How Deep Is Your Love? It’s STUNNING.
Here’s a great truth about being a voiceover…
This is true. Trust me. I know.
So does my window cleaner.
