What's been going on in my sound studio?
Read on for news, stuff about voicing, composing, creativity, book recs, some music and a v cute pic of my dog.
The above quote is true.
Try saying ‘floral requirements’ fast and you’ll see what I mean.
You can only imagine the hell I went through in the run-up to Valentine’s Day. I’ll have to brace myself for Mother’s Day now.
First of all…some news (ish)
In the next few weeks I’ll be able to tell you about a big voiceover project I’m working on that will be going live in the next few weeks.
I can’t stand it when people say ‘ooh I’m working on something great but I can’t breathe a single word’ so I’m kinda ashamed I’m even saying this.
But trust me, it’s going to be ace.
What have I been doing this month?
1. Voicing
This month I’ve recorded lots of voiceovers for (among others) BBC Bitesize, Sky, L’Oréal and London Underground.
But for me, this snippet is one of this month’s personal highlights.

2. Rehearsing, performing and composing music
I wrote a piece of music for the Britten Sinfonia that’s been extended for the RNCM Sinfonietta. It was incredible hearing it being played by amazing musicians in rehearsals and in an actual concert. In this episode of my pop-up podcast, you can hear the glorious sound of the orchestra tuning up.
I made this short video about the deep complexities of a composer’s creative process…
3. Reading.
Oliver Burkeman’s Four Thousand Weeks is ‘the most important book ever written about time management.’ The premise is this: you’re alive for a limited time. What if you stopped trying to do everything, so that you could finally get round to doing what counts? This book is thought-provoking, uplifting and potentially life-changing. Have a listen to this quick summary.
4. Listening.
This is one of the simplest, subtlest pieces of music I’ve ever heard. See if you can count how many notes are in the melody.

And this month’s best piece of client feedback is…
“Dear Emma, you’ve become our go-to voice for commercials about funeral homes. You manage to sound friendly and cheerful, even in a morbid setting. So thanks!”
