Me, playing with a cassette recorder as a child.
This is the first time I ever recorded my own voice. Have a listen.
I’ve always been fascinated by audio.
To me, the cassette recorder my mother won in a tombola (or was it a raffle?) was a magical object.
It was a time machine that could take me back a few seconds or minutes, to re-hear what I’d just recorded.
To me, that was extraordinary.
It’s still extraordinary.
And now this wonderful sound transports me back to a time when I still had parents.
Listening to it, I feel such homesickness.
This is audio of me as a very small child reciting stories I’d memorised from listening to Disney story vinyl records over and over and over.
It’s incredibly evocative and has taken me right back to my childhood, our house, my family.
This scratchy, crackly cassette recording was the very beginning of my lifelong love of making audio.
Have a listen.
If you like what I do, you can buy me a coffee!
